Locally, in, and around Nuevo Mundo, farmers are currently limited to planting during the rainy season. Unfortunately, the area has experienced a record-breaking drought for over a decade. While there is limited rain water, and very little irrigation infrastructure, there is a substantial and well-studied aquifer below the valley of Nuevo Mundo, capable of providing the entire community with ample water for domestic as well as agricultural use. That's where we come in!
BACCA is excited to be partnering with the local agricultural Cooperative "Candido Gonzalez Morales” and its president, Humberto Castillo Torres, as well as the current Delegate of the area, Niover Lazaro Rubio Rivero, to bring to fruition several cooperative initiatives that will serve to empower Cuban agriculturalists in the area. The first of which are the completion of a new well, the installation of a high-capacity solar pump and irrigation system, and the construction of two large SuperAdobe water storage cisterns in the Nuevo Mundo valley, where the aforementioned agricultural cooperative is based.
In April, 2016, BACCA will be installing this solar water pump in a new well we are currently digging in Nuevo Mundo. We will also be installing plumbing for irrigation, and will begin construction of the SuperAdobe Water Storage Cisterns this year!
